Demon City Netflix Review: A Gritty Japanese Action Thriller That Delivers

If you’re in search of an action film that will make you bloody consume, Demon City on Netflix might be the perfect choice for your next viewing. The film’s director is Seiji Tanaka, this 2025 Japanese revenge thriller features intense fight scenes, an enthralling story, and a memorable performance by the lead actor Toma Ikuta. While some may think it as an Korean film because of the subtitle, Demon City is deeply grounded in Japanese comics and legends, bringing an entirely new spin on the standard revenge tale. Let’s look at the reasons why this film is worth watching and what isn’t.

What Is Demon City About?

The film traces the story of Shuhei Sakata (Toma Ikuta) who is a former hitman trying to put the bloody history behind and live peace and quiet life with his family. However, tragedy catches the actor when his daughter and wife are murdered by the Kimengumi syndicate, and he is accused of being responsible for the crime. After being abandoned and shot dead, with a bullet lodged in his forehead, Sakata survives a miracle but is rushed to an induced coma. Twelve years pass until he returns to with a single goal to take revenge.

With rage and fighting skills, Sakata tracks down the mask-wearing “demons” who destroyed his life. Through this Sakata uncovers a dark truth about the connection between the syndicate and Japanese folklore myths that blur the line between human evil and supernatural terror.

Why the Action Scenes Steal the Show

If you like well-crafted fight sequences, Demon City won’t leave you in awe. The film is an intense battle scene of swords close combat and a variety of innovative killings. In contrast to action films that rely on slow motion footage Tanaka lets the action scenes to breathe. You are able to watch every punch, slash and parry with a sharp, clear view making the battles seem real and intimate.

One of the highlights is the moment when Sakata is battling twelve masked thugs in a gloomy alleyway. The action blends slow-motion with rapid motion, demonstrating Ikuta’s dedication to the physicality and intensity of the character. Beware: the bloodletting that follows isn’t for the faint of heart. Limbs fly as blood splatters, and the camera isn’t afraid.

Japanese Culture and Folklore Add Depth

Demon City is unique in mixing traditional Japanese elements into its modern setting. The Kimen-gumi gang wears demon-themed oni masks based on local legends, while creepy spots like abandoned shrines and fog-filled forests pay homage to classic horror tales. These elements give a distinct flavour to the film compared to typical action thrillers.

The movie also explores themes of redemption and karma. Sakata quest isn’t only about revenge. It’s an attempt to confront his own fears that are both literal and metaphorical. This is what makes the story intriguing even when the plot seems familiar.

Toma Ikuta Shines as the Broken Hero

Toma Ikuta, who usually has lighter roles on Japanese dramas, is an antihero who is tortured. His portrayal of Sakata’s pain and rage is captivating. In his calmer scenes you can see the sadness in his eyes, a reminder that Sakata isn’t just an armed killer, but also an unfinished human being. Ikuta’s athleticism does not impress, since he executes many himself in his stunts, adding authenticity to the fight scenes.

Supporting actors, like the mysterious crime theorist Mephisto give the show an air of mystery. However, they don’t get much development which is a wasted chance. The focus remains focused on Sakata and this works for the story but leaves the world seem a bit undeveloped.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The Good:

  • Action Choreography A few of the most epic battle scenes from the current Japanese film.
  • Atmosphere Folkloric and dark references create a haunting ambience.
  • Lead Performance Ikuta is the main character in this film, bringing physical and emotional force.

The Not-So-Good:

  • Predictable Plot The revenge plot follows an established path with no surprises.
  • Too Much Gore Although it is thrilling, the gore could dissuade viewers who are not affluent.
  • A rushed ending: dramatic fight scene unfolds too fast after having built so quickly.

Is Demon City Worth Watching?

If you’re a big fan of action films like John Wick or The Raid, give Demon City an opportunity. The film is a refreshing take on the genre, particularly through its themes of culture to be a standout within the genre. Toma Ikuta’s performance is worth a look. Be wary of plot realism and be prepared to be prepared for violent scenes.

Demon City isn’t an old classic, but it’s an enjoyable, action-packed adventure. Check it out on Netflix at night for a dose of the thrill of revenge and incredible fight scenes. Make sure you don’t turn the lights on as those oni masks can be eerie.
